With the amount of people dying in internet cafes (granted it's not that many but they are still dying from playing a computer game) from playing MMOs for an insane number of hours, I'd say quite a few.
I'd say about half the people I trade with are Chinese as well.

Wow. I hope ANet gives the Chinese players rollbacks. I've never heard of a security breach this huge.

That's pretty bad >_<. Hope they'll be fixed soon... I know I'd hate facing such a problem.
I had stopped following the previous case with The9... thought I'd ask what had been the outcome with the previous incident. Don't think it was mentionned in this thread o.o

But Guild Wars China is operated by The9 Limited.
I repeat so you can read it clearly.
Guild Wars China is operated by The9 Limited.
They have a 3 year license to operate Guild Wars services in China. Not NCSoft or ArenaNet.
Everyone please stop blaming Anet or NCsoft.

It looks to me like a contractual/legal dispute between NCSoft/ANet and The 9 (the company that runs GW in China). As a result of that the servers were closed. After emergency talks, a preliminary agreement was reached. Resulting in opening the GW servers again (only for selected campaigns). Here something went horribly wrong because no passwords were needed to logon. As a result of that, characters were raided of items and in some cases deleted.
Disclaimer: this is pure speculation on my part as I have no hard facts, but after reading what little is known, this is what I can deduce.

Yeah, the9 is basically crap, I think they leaked the server codes under the hood.

This has been an ongoing story here for a while, if you recall about 6 mos ago there was another story similar to this about The9 that was causing a ruckus. The9 is hosting the servers FOR NCSOFT, so in essence it is an issue that you can send a support ticket into NCSOFT.

Wasn't there a law passed dictating how much time you can spend on a MMORPG a day? I could have sworn I've read about this somewhere. Anyways, I feel sorry for the Chinese players. (I'm one of those pro-Taiwan independence people.. so.. )

Shadowfox, that was specifically Blizzard that did that with WoW. I believe it was 3 hours at a time. Not sure if that extended to all games.

This article was dated 2005, i dont know if its fully implemented or enforced.
edit: then again one of the reasons such things exist is because MMORPGamers can talk freely and we all know how the Chinese government doesnt like that.

This could be a attempt from Anet to shut down or end the China Gold farming. that justwent really wrong or since it is china they could have had a minor disagrement with Anet which happend it is china and they have some of the worst government restrictions like deleting bloggers post because they are speaking their minds civilian freedoms are limited in china.
the law is mostly the reason for all the problem between Anet and China or since it is China and has some of the best hackers they could have hacked the crap outa the 9th city servers.
A roll back or server reset would fix this hopefuly but they need to find out how this happend and why before they roll back or do a reset because if it happend once it can happen again.

Not to go off-topic but GW not specifically being an MMORPG I wonder if it still applies? Regardless, hopefully our Chinese friends will be able to update us on the situation.

I'm having difficult understanding exactly what's happening. I know it's asking a lot but can anybody put this in to simple terms for my simple mind?
From what I gather, a technical issue resulted in people's accounts being accessible without a password - on a national scale?
Sorry in advance. I'm having a retarded day.
By clicking the link to the chinese forum, the pissed of animé cartoons tell me its a nasty sitatuation.

Well then if that is the case, itas bad news for everyone. Afterall last thing we need is a hacker with access to the server code of GW.

All those poor rare Pandas that got lost...
But ehh, on-topic:
I really hope Arena Net does something about this and try to prevent it in the future.

Weather ANET runs the server or not... it still affect them and they should have some information about the event... they might not be at fault directly, but it is still their copywrited property being used and loaned out... its probably The 9's own fault and a security issue... but in turn, ANET must have some information about it. And if accounts in those area's are effected... I am sorry, but I want to know that my account is safe...
